The Cretan Diet.

Over the last few years much has been said and written about the Crete Diet or Mediterranean Diet. It is now well known that the Crete Diet is not only aromatic and tasteful, but also extremely healthy too. The food has already taken its rightful place in the annals of Crete's culture and lifestyle. Today it is a fitting tribute to their historic identity, their culture, the sun and sea. The most notary product that gave so much credit to Crete Diet is of course our virgin olive oil. The contribution of the local wine, vegetables, meat, dairy products (Feta cheese & Gruyere) is equally as significant. The modern dietician considers the Crete diet and the Cretan way of life as a prime reason for the population's general longevity and good health. I have watched this food being prepared and enjoyed it for as long as I can remember. Some of our family recipes are now here for anybody to sample.

Most of the international researches bring Crete forward as the example of a typical Mediterranean Diet. The residents of the island have the lowest mortality rates internationally and a low degree of heart attacks or cancer diseases. Scientists started searching for the identity of the Crete Diet that gives the Crete ns all these health privileges. The answers were to be found in the distant past in that the facts were not a result of research by scientists but rather a biological experiment that has been ongoing for thousands of years! For the Crete ns, the secret of good health and long living is very simple. They eat all that their rich soil gives them in the form of many fruits, vegetables, groceries, legumes, varieties of cheese, olive oil and bread. They enhance the taste with marvelous herbs like oregano and Thyme; they make desserts with natural sweeteners such as honey and molasses, and accompany their meals with excellent local wine. What more could you ask for.

If you would like to sample some of the more traditional and common Greek Dishes cooked throughout Greece, then listed below are various family recipes for you to choose from. I have been brought up to appreciate a variety of continental foods but traditional Greek home cooking has to be one of my favourites. My recipes include soups, salads, main courses and desserts. They are all fairly easy to follow and many have step by step instructions for those who would like to try, but feel it may not be easy. Give it a go! I am sure you will enjoy them as much as we do.
