Crete lies at the point where the continents of Europe, Asia and Africa meet. It is the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean with an area of 8,335 square kilometres. It has an elongated shape with an east-west axis, a length of 257km and a maximum width of 60km. However, in the area of Ierapetra, Crete is only 12km wide. Crete is divided into four prefectures (nomos). From west to east they are: Chania, Rethymnon, Heraklion and Lassithi. Each of the prefectures is subdivided into provinces (eparchies). The Nomos Chanion is subdivided into Kydonia, Apokoronas, Sfakia, Kissamos and Selino. The Nomos Rethimnou is subdivided into Rethymnon, Milopotamos, Amari and Agios Vasilios. The Nomos Irakliou is subdivided into Malevizi, Temenos, Pediada, Pirgiotisa, Kainourio, Monofatsi and Vianos. The Nomos Lassithiou is subdivided into Mirabelo, Lassithi, Ierapetra and Sitia.

Roumeli ~ Crete

Irinikos Villa itself is located on the boundary line of the traditional village of Roumeli. This village lies approximately 20Km east of the principle town for this prefecture, Rethymnon. The beaches in this area are many and varied. The local tourist resort of Panormos is only 2 Km down the road and well within walking distance. Most of your holiday needs can easily be met by the facilities offered within the local village. You will find several Cafenions, a good sized supermarket, bakeries and Tavernas. As yet this wonderful village is untouched by the mass tourist industry and is still the same quite village it has been for many, many years. Much more information about this area and all the surrounding areas can be found, together with pictures, on our Information Page. Please feel free to browse and comment on our web site should you so wish.
